Domain Naming System
An InterNet wide distributed database for mapping IP addresses to names. It is centrally controlled by ICANN.

DNS is ultimately controlled by ICANN, and this leaves the basic naming system used by the InterNet controlled by a central authority. This is bad for both technical and political reasons. Removal of reliance on DNS for anything important is one motivation for CAKE, even though some TopologicalAddresses that CAKE will support are DNS based.
